My Story
While I didn't grow up in a small town, I loved reading about them. My favorite books took place in small villages and neighborhoods — Anne of Green Gables, Pollyanna, Heidi. I loved them for their realism, holding a magnifying glass to characters' ordinary lives and making meaning out of them. I realized that that's how my brain works, fixated on the little moments before I'm able to appreciate the big.
In freshman year of college, I started writing for my college newspaper and realized that journalism was the perfect fit. Those magic words, "Hey, I'm Julia and I'm a reporter for —" opened up doors to conversations and spaces I would never have thought to enter.
I’ve made a career listening to people talk about what matters to them — often the key to discovering how public affairs impact people on the ground. My motto? Look for the little things. Being intentional about stopping to see others has revealed to me a world of big stories.
Got a tip for me? No story’s too small. I’m here to listen.
